Yesterday I watched the cancer story of a little Chinese girl suffering from skin cancer. The documentary is called "the girl who lives in the dark" and is told from the point of view of the skin cancer doctor.
In my opinion a very over-optimistic view about modern an over-optimistic show about advanced surgical techniques and cutting-edge technology.
The girl who lives in the dark
Dark skin girl : 9 year old Lao Yang
Wan Lao Yang is a 9-year-old girl from China suffering from Xeroderma Pigmentosum. This is a genetic disorder which makes the skin unable to repair itself after exposure to UV. light. You know: simple sunlight. Lao Yang lives on top of the hills, being even closer to the UV. rays of the sun that harms her body. Due to this, her face got covered with cancer tumors.
This cancer story documents Wan Lao’s journey to Shanghai, and the treatment she receives from a specialist from the famous Great Ormornd Street Hospital. It also explores the work of NASA’s Sun Protection Team which has created a customised ‘sun suit’ for Wan Lao that blocks out 100% of UV rays.
Dream on
A lot of phoo waa , "dream on how advanced technology is these days", "dream on how nice and smart all doctors are", until the skin cancer story gets told a few seconds from the eyes of Lao Wang:
- without the tumor I will look less ugly
- I want to be able to go to school again
- little sister: listen to mom when I am in the hospital
Metastatic cancer is bad, no matter what
Cancer is not the big dream on phoo waa of "what we have achieved with modern technology". Cancer is natures answer to all the damage we are doing to it. And innocent people like Lao Yang who are far away from modern technology even have to suffer more…
