Pancreatic cancer prognosis

It’s always the same: as soon as I hear somebody has this or that type of cancer, I start googling it up. Although I don’t know Pavarotti personally, Pavarotti pancreatic cancer has again alerted me to do some more research about pancreatic cancer.

I just want to compare it with father’s metastatic liver cancer and since the outcome of father and Pavarotti is the same, sometimes you wonder why I start even researching in the first place.

But in our local community I am getting recognized as the cancer specialist. Gosh, I am far from that! Doctors specialize for years and years in 1 type of cancer, so I am no specialist. I do know about palliative care and I do know how cancer changes the live of a person and his dearest beloved ones. So I am trying to live up to people’s expectations. In the end the questions are more or less the same, and for sure the anger, pain and fear is!

Pancreatic cancer prognosis

The chance of recovery and treatment options for pancreatic cancer will depend on whether can the tumour be removed by surgery.

Other factors to take into consideration are the stage of the cancer:

• whether it is localized
• or has spread to surrounding nearby tissues or lymph nodes or to other parts of the body.

The patient’s general health is also important and whether the cancer has just been diagnosed or it is a recurrence. In the end: once you have seen one cancer, it seems that the general answers are quite similar… I could have said the above also about father’s metastatic liver cancer.

Pancreatic cancer can be controlled only if it is detected early before it has spread and surgery is possible.  

If however if the cancer has spread, the prognosis would be poor and palliative treatment can improve the qualify of life.

You all need to know that "quality of life’ is a buzz word used by doctors and nurses. It’s up to you and your loved ones to give your personal answer on what is meant by quality of life. You will learn that things are relative…

Our father passed away from metastatic liver cancer because none of his doctors had ever seen nor experienced somebody surviving this disease. We paid them huge amounts of money and they told us "there is no cure". And just like that, all will power to survive and beat the cancer disappeared in father's eyes...

The best cancer treatment: having a healthy body

As long as there is no bullet proof cure for cancer, it all boils down to Darwin's survival of the fittest. The best way to get ahead of cancer is:

 

• making sure you don't get cancer
   
• making sure your body has all it can get to kill cancer cells

 

Cancer prevention boils down to eating and living healthy, keeping a healthy mind in a healthy body.

 

Easier said than done in a world were your job stresses you out, car smoke pollutes your air, food is filled with residu's and water is polluted.

 

But if your life is dear to you, then you cannot use all the above as an excuse. Father had been smoking, had worked with asbestos and didn't eat much vegetables nor fruit. Father died with metastatic liver cancer in a way I wouldn't even wish my worst enemy.

 

When your life is dear to you, start doing all the things that our metastatic liver cancer survivors are doing:

 

1. Believe there is a cure : believe it like you believe the sun will rise tomorrow.

 

2. Use conventional medicine like chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation therapy.

 

3. Add to that alternative cancer treatments to boost your immune system and overall health:

 

• the healthier you are: the better you can fight of diseases and
   
• the healthier you are: the better chemotherapy could work for you
   

 

4. Follow an holistic health approach: having a healthy spirit in a healthy body:

 

• focus on less stress,
   
• more relaxation,
   
• more exercise (Jim's son is swimming twice a week for both exercise and relaxation),
   
• a healthy diet based on organic products
   
• make sure you have a hobby to pass your time doing something you love
   

 

5. Make sure you have money or good health insurance to buy what you need to better achieve all of the above.

 

6. Surround yourself with as many loving and helpful creatures you can find: according to pancreatic cancer patient Patrick Swayze:

 

"you gotta have a dog"
